Question 89

EasyOriginal question

The lines r⃗=a⃗1+λb⃗\vec{r} = \vec{a}_1 + \lambda\vec{b} and r⃗=a⃗2+μb⃗\vec{r} = \vec{a}_2 + \mu\vec{b} are parallel and distinct. Which expression gives the distance between them?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. For parallel lines b⃗×b⃗=0⃗\vec{b} \times \vec{b} = \vec{0}, so the skew-lines formula would divide by 0.

  2. The gap is the part of a⃗2−a⃗1\vec{a}_2 - \vec{a}_1 across b⃗\vec{b}: d=∣b⃗×(a⃗2−a⃗1)∣∣b⃗∣d = \frac{\lvert \vec{b} \times (\vec{a}_2 - \vec{a}_1) \rvert}{\lvert \vec{b} \rvert}.

Worth noting

The skew-lines formula needs b⃗1×b⃗2≠0⃗\vec{b}_1 \times \vec{b}_2 \ne \vec{0}; with one direction b⃗\vec{b} it becomes 00\frac{0}{0}.
