Question 118

HardOriginal question

What is the shortest distance between the line r⃗=(3i^−j^+2k^)+λ(2i^+j^−k^)\vec{r} = (3\hat{i} - \hat{j} + 2\hat{k}) + \lambda(2\hat{i} + \hat{j} - \hat{k}) and the zz-axis?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. The zz-axis is r⃗=μk^\vec{r} = \mu\hat{k}, so b⃗1×b⃗2=(2i^+j^−k^)×k^=i^−2j^\vec{b}_1 \times \vec{b}_2 = (2\hat{i} + \hat{j} - \hat{k}) \times \hat{k} = \hat{i} - 2\hat{j}, of length 5\sqrt{5}.

  2. a⃗2−a⃗1=−3i^+j^−2k^\vec{a}_2 - \vec{a}_1 = -3\hat{i} + \hat{j} - 2\hat{k}, so d=∣−3−2∣5=55=5d = \frac{\lvert -3 - 2 \rvert}{\sqrt{5}} = \frac{5}{\sqrt{5}} = \sqrt{5}.

Worth noting

5 is the numerator alone; divided by 5\sqrt{5} it gives 5\sqrt{5}.
