Question 51

HardOriginal question

For which λ\lambda are A(1,2,3)A(1, 2, 3), B(2,3,5)B(2, 3, 5) and C(λ,5,9)C(\lambda, 5, 9) collinear?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. AB→=i^+j^+2k^\overrightarrow{AB} = \hat{i} + \hat{j} + 2\hat{k} and AC→=(λ−1)i^+3j^+6k^\overrightarrow{AC} = (\lambda - 1)\hat{i} + 3\hat{j} + 6\hat{k} must be parallel.

  2. The j^\hat{j} and k^\hat{k} parts show AC→=3AB→\overrightarrow{AC} = 3\overrightarrow{AB}, so λ−1=3\lambda - 1 = 3: λ=4\lambda = 4.

Worth noting

3 is the multiplier, AC→=3AB→\overrightarrow{AC} = 3\overrightarrow{AB}, not λ\lambda; λ\lambda is one more.
