Question 58

HardOriginal question

a⃗\vec{a} and b⃗\vec{b} are non-collinear vectors. For which λ\lambda are the points with position vectors a⃗+2b⃗\vec{a} + 2\vec{b}, 3a⃗−b⃗3\vec{a} - \vec{b} and λa⃗+8b⃗\lambda\vec{a} + 8\vec{b} collinear?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Call the points AA, BB, CC: AB→=2a⃗−3b⃗\overrightarrow{AB} = 2\vec{a} - 3\vec{b} and AC→=(λ−1)a⃗+6b⃗\overrightarrow{AC} = (\lambda - 1)\vec{a} + 6\vec{b}.

  2. Collinear means AC→=μAB→\overrightarrow{AC} = \mu\overrightarrow{AB}; the b⃗\vec{b} parts give μ=−2\mu = -2, so λ−1=−4\lambda - 1 = -4 and λ=−3\lambda = -3.

Worth noting

5 takes μ=2\mu = 2, missing that 66 and −3-3 have opposite signs.
