Question 54

HardOriginal question

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Opposite sides of a regular hexagon are equal and parallel: AB→=ED→\overrightarrow{AB} = \overrightarrow{ED} and AF→=CD→\overrightarrow{AF} = \overrightarrow{CD}.

  2. By the triangle law, AE→+ED→=AD→\overrightarrow{AE} + \overrightarrow{ED} = \overrightarrow{AD} and AC→+CD→=AD→\overrightarrow{AC} + \overrightarrow{CD} = \overrightarrow{AD}.

  3. So the sum is AD→+AD→+AD→=3AD→\overrightarrow{AD} + \overrightarrow{AD} + \overrightarrow{AD} = 3\overrightarrow{AD}.

Worth noting

2AD→2\overrightarrow{AD} pairs off the four outer vectors but leaves out AD→\overrightarrow{AD} itself.
