Question 53

HardOriginal question

The points A(1,−2,3)A(1, -2, 3), B(3,0,1)B(3, 0, 1) and C(4,1,0)C(4, 1, 0) are collinear. How does CC divide ABAB?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. AC→=3i^+3j^−3k^\overrightarrow{AC} = 3\hat{i} + 3\hat{j} - 3\hat{k} and CB→=−i^−j^+k^\overrightarrow{CB} = -\hat{i} - \hat{j} + \hat{k}, so AC→=−3CB→\overrightarrow{AC} = -3\overrightarrow{CB}.

  2. The lengths are in the ratio AC:CB=3:1AC : CB = 3 : 1, and the minus sign puts CC outside ABAB, beyond BB: external division.

  3. Check: 3(3,0,1)−(1,−2,3)3−1=(4,1,0)\frac{3(3, 0, 1) - (1, -2, 3)}{3 - 1} = (4, 1, 0).

Worth noting

Internally in the ratio 3 : 1 would put CC between AA and BB, at (52,−12,32)\left(\frac{5}{2}, -\frac{1}{2}, \frac{3}{2}\right).
