Question 81

MediumOriginal question

a⃗\vec{a}, b⃗\vec{b} and c⃗\vec{c} are mutually perpendicular, with ∣a⃗∣=2\lvert \vec{a} \rvert = 2, ∣b⃗∣=3\lvert \vec{b} \rvert = 3 and ∣c⃗∣=6\lvert \vec{c} \rvert = 6. What is ∣a⃗+b⃗+c⃗∣\lvert \vec{a} + \vec{b} + \vec{c} \rvert?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. ∣a⃗+b⃗+c⃗∣2=∣a⃗∣2+∣b⃗∣2+∣c⃗∣2+2(a⃗⋅b⃗+b⃗⋅c⃗+c⃗⋅a⃗)\lvert \vec{a} + \vec{b} + \vec{c} \rvert^{2} = \lvert \vec{a} \rvert^{2} + \lvert \vec{b} \rvert^{2} + \lvert \vec{c} \rvert^{2} + 2(\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} + \vec{b} \cdot \vec{c} + \vec{c} \cdot \vec{a}).

  2. Every scalar product is 0, so it is 4+9+36=494 + 9 + 36 = 49, and ∣a⃗+b⃗+c⃗∣=7\lvert \vec{a} + \vec{b} + \vec{c} \rvert = 7.

Worth noting

11 adds the magnitudes, as if all three vectors pointed the same way.
