Question 122

HardOriginal question

a⃗=i^+j^+λk^\vec{a} = \hat{i} + \hat{j} + \lambda\hat{k} and b⃗=i^−j^\vec{b} = \hat{i} - \hat{j}, with λ>0\lambda > 0. The parallelogram with adjacent sides a⃗\vec{a} and b⃗\vec{b} has area 232\sqrt{3} square units. What is λ\lambda?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. a⃗×b⃗=i^(0+λ)−j^(0−λ)+k^(−1−1)=λi^+λj^−2k^\vec{a} \times \vec{b} = \hat{i}(0 + \lambda) - \hat{j}(0 - \lambda) + \hat{k}(-1 - 1) = \lambda\hat{i} + \lambda\hat{j} - 2\hat{k}.

  2. Area =2λ2+4=23= \sqrt{2\lambda^{2} + 4} = 2\sqrt{3}, so 2λ2+4=122\lambda^{2} + 4 = 12, λ2=4\lambda^{2} = 4 and λ=2\lambda = 2.

Worth noting

22\sqrt{22} halves the vector product as for a triangle; a parallelogram's area is the whole ∣a⃗×b⃗∣\lvert \vec{a} \times \vec{b} \rvert.
