Question 123

HardOriginal question

a⃗=i^+j^+k^\vec{a} = \hat{i} + \hat{j} + \hat{k}. A vector b⃗\vec{b} has a⃗×b⃗=−i^+2j^−k^\vec{a} \times \vec{b} = -\hat{i} + 2\hat{j} - \hat{k} and a⃗⋅b⃗=3\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} = 3. What is b⃗\vec{b}?

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Let b⃗=xi^+yj^+zk^\vec{b} = x\hat{i} + y\hat{j} + z\hat{k}. Then a⃗⋅b⃗=x+y+z=3\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} = x + y + z = 3.

  2. a⃗×b⃗=(z−y)i^+(x−z)j^+(y−x)k^\vec{a} \times \vec{b} = (z - y)\hat{i} + (x - z)\hat{j} + (y - x)\hat{k}, so z−y=−1z - y = -1, x−z=2x - z = 2 and y−x=−1y - x = -1.

  3. So y=x−1y = x - 1 and z=x−2z = x - 2; then 3x−3=33x - 3 = 3 gives x=2x = 2, and b⃗=2i^+j^\vec{b} = 2\hat{i} + \hat{j}.

Worth noting

j^+2k^\hat{j} + 2\hat{k} solves b⃗×a⃗=−i^+2j^−k^\vec{b} \times \vec{a} = -\hat{i} + 2\hat{j} - \hat{k}, the product in the other order.
