CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Let it be tt years ago: 42−t=6(12−t)42 - t = 6(12 - t).

  2. 42−t=72−6t42 - t = 72 - 6t, so 5t=305t = 30.

  3. t=6t = 6. Check: 6 years ago they were 36 and 6.

Worth noting

Forgetting to subtract t from Joseph's age (42=6(12−t))(42 = 6(12 - t)) gives 5 years. Both people go back in time together.
