Question 41

MediumOriginal question

Two machines in a factory work independently. On a given day, machine X breaks down with probability 15\frac{1}{5} and machine Y with probability 14\frac{1}{4}. What is the probability that exactly one of the two machines breaks down that day?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Exactly one = (X fails and Y works) or (X works and Y fails).

  2. 15×34=320\frac{1}{5} \times \frac{3}{4} = \frac{3}{20} and 45×14=420\frac{4}{5} \times \frac{1}{4} = \frac{4}{20}.

  3. These cases cannot both happen, so add: 720\frac{7}{20}.

Worth noting

25\frac{2}{5} is P(at least one fails), which also includes both failing (120)(\frac{1}{20}). 35\frac{3}{5} is P(neither fails).
