MediumOriginal question

Two fair dice are rolled. What is the probability that the product of the two numbers is even?

Options for question 57

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. A product is odd only when BOTH numbers are odd: 3×3=93 \times 3 = 9 of the 36 outcomes.

  2. P(product even) =1−936=2736=34= 1 - \frac{9}{36} = \frac{27}{36} = \frac{3}{4}.

Worth noting

14\frac{1}{4} is P(product odd). 12\frac{1}{2} assumes even and odd products are equally likely, but one even number is enough to make the product even.
