Question 19

MediumOriginal question

In triangle ABC, the exterior angle at C is 110∘110^\circ and the interior angle at A is 45∘45^\circ. What is the measure of angle B?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. The exterior angle of a triangle equals the sum of the two interior angles not adjacent to it.

  2. The exterior angle at C is therefore A+BA + B, so 110∘=45∘+B110^\circ = 45^\circ + B.

  3. This gives B=65∘B = 65^\circ.

  4. Check by the longer route: the interior angle at C is 180∘−110∘=70∘180^\circ - 110^\circ = 70^\circ, and 45∘+65∘+70∘=180∘45^\circ + 65^\circ + 70^\circ = 180^\circ.

Worth noting

The 70∘70^\circ on offer is the interior angle at C, which the check above computes on the way. It is the right number for the wrong vertex.
