Question 26

HardOriginal question

In triangle ABC, ∠A=70∘\angle A = 70^\circ. The bisectors of the exterior angles at B and C meet at J. What is ∠BJC\angle BJC?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. The exterior angle at B is 180∘−∠B180^\circ - \angle B and at C is 180∘−∠C180^\circ - \angle C. Their halves are 90∘−12∠B90^\circ - \tfrac{1}{2}\angle B and 90∘−12∠C90^\circ - \tfrac{1}{2}\angle C.

  2. In triangle BJC, ∠BJC=180∘−(90∘−12∠B)−(90∘−12∠C)=12(∠B+∠C)\angle BJC = 180^\circ - (90^\circ - \tfrac{1}{2}\angle B) - (90^\circ - \tfrac{1}{2}\angle C) = \tfrac{1}{2}(\angle B + \angle C).

  3. ∠B+∠C=110∘\angle B + \angle C = 110^\circ, so ∠BJC=55∘\angle BJC = 55^\circ.

  4. Shortcut: ∠BJC=90∘−12∠A=90∘−35∘=55∘\angle BJC = 90^\circ - \frac{1}{2}\angle A = 90^\circ - 35^\circ = 55^\circ.

Worth noting

125° is the answer for the INTERNAL bisectors (90∘+12∠A)(90^\circ + \tfrac{1}{2}\angle A). For exterior bisectors it is 90∘−12∠A90^\circ - \tfrac{1}{2}\angle A.
