Question 31

EasyOriginal question

In triangle ABC, D is on AB and E is on AC with DE parallel to BC. AD=4AD = 4 cm, DB=6DB = 6 cm and AE=5AE = 5 cm. What is EC?

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. By the basic proportionality theorem, AD:DB=AE:ECAD : DB = AE : EC.

  2. 46=5EC\frac{4}{6} = \frac{5}{EC}, so EC=5×64=7.5EC = \frac{5 \times 6}{4} = 7.5 cm.

Worth noting

3133\frac{1}{3} cm comes from flipping the ratio, and 12.5 cm is the whole side AC, not EC.
