MediumOriginal question

In triangle PQR, S is on PQ and T is on PR with ST parallel to QR. PS:SQ=2:3PS : SQ = 2 : 3 and QR=20QR = 20 cm. What is ST?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. ST∥QRST \parallel QR, so triangle PST is similar to triangle PQR.

  2. PS:PQ=2:(2+3)=2:5PS : PQ = 2 : (2 + 3) = 2 : 5.

  3. ST = 20×25=820 \times \frac{2}{5} = 8 cm.

Worth noting

The scale factor uses the WHOLE side PQ (2+3=52 + 3 = 5 parts), not SQ. Using 2:32 : 3 gives 131313\frac{1}{3} cm.
