Question 66

HardOriginal question

Points A, B, C and D lie on a circle in that order, with AB=BCAB = BC and ∠ABC=110∘\angle ABC = 110^\circ. What is ∠BDC\angle BDC?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. AB=BCAB = BC, so in triangle ABC, ∠BAC=∠BCA=(180∘−110∘)÷2=35∘\angle BAC = \angle BCA = (180^\circ - 110^\circ) \div 2 = 35^\circ.

  2. ∠BDC\angle BDC and ∠BAC\angle BAC stand on the same arc BC and lie in the same segment, so they are equal.

  3. ∠BDC=35∘\angle BDC = 35^\circ.

Worth noting

70° is ∠ADC\angle ADC (180∘−110∘)(180^\circ - 110^\circ), the whole angle at D. ∠BDC\angle BDC is only the part of it that faces arc BC.
