Question 13

HardOriginal question

AOB is a straight line. Rays OP and OQ lie on the same side of AB with ∠AOP=40∘\angle AOP = 40^\circ and ∠BOQ=70∘\angle BOQ = 70^\circ. Ray OR bisects ∠POQ\angle POQ. What is ∠AOR\angle AOR?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. The three angles ∠AOP\angle AOP, ∠POQ\angle POQ, ∠QOB\angle QOB make the straight angle: ∠POQ=180∘−40∘−70∘=70∘\angle POQ = 180^\circ - 40^\circ - 70^\circ = 70^\circ.

  2. OR bisects it, so ∠POR=35∘\angle POR = 35^\circ.

  3. ∠AOR=∠AOP+∠POR=40∘+35∘=75∘\angle AOR = \angle AOP + \angle POR = 40^\circ + 35^\circ = 75^\circ.

Worth noting

35° is only ∠POR\angle POR, and 105° is ∠BOR\angle BOR (70∘+35∘)(70^\circ + 35^\circ). Check: 75∘+105∘=180∘75^\circ + 105^\circ = 180^\circ.
