CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Distance of the 16 cm chord from the centre = 172−82=15\sqrt{17^2 - 8^2} = 15 cm.

  2. Distance of the 30 cm chord from the centre = 172−152=8\sqrt{17^2 - 15^2} = 8 cm.

  3. On opposite sides of the centre the distances add: 15+8=2315 + 8 = 23 cm.

Worth noting

7 cm is the answer when both chords are on the SAME side of the centre. Read which case the question describes.
