Question 39

HardOriginal question

In triangle LMN, X is on LM and Y is on LN with XY parallel to MN, and LX:XM=3:4LX : XM = 3 : 4. What is the ratio of the area of triangle LXY to the area of the quadrilateral XMNY?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Triangle LXY is similar to triangle LMN with LX:LM=3:7LX : LM = 3 : 7.

  2. Area ratio = 32:72=9:493^2 : 7^2 = 9 : 49.

  3. The quadrilateral XMNY is what is left: 49−9=4049 - 9 = 40 parts.

  4. So area of LXY : area of XMNY = 9:409 : 40.

Worth noting

9:499 : 49 compares the small triangle with the WHOLE triangle, and 9:169 : 16 wrongly uses 3:43 : 4 as the scale factor.
