CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Let the value be xx. The part under the first root after 12 is xx itself, so x=12+xx = \sqrt{12 + x}.

  2. Square: x2=12+xx^2 = 12 + x, so x2−x−12=0x^2 - x - 12 = 0, i.e. (x−4)(x+3)=0(x - 4)(x + 3) = 0.

  3. A square root is positive, so x=4x = 4.

Worth noting

23=122\sqrt{3} = \sqrt{12} is only the first layer; each extra layer pushes the value up towards 4. Shortcut: for N+N+…\sqrt{N + \sqrt{N + \dots}}, look for N=n(n−1)N = n(n - 1); here 12=4×312 = 4 \times 3, so the value is 4.
