CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Let x=1ux = \frac{1}{u} and y=1dy = \frac{1}{d} for upstream and downstream speeds uu, dd.

  2. 24x+36y=624x + 36y = 6 and 36x+24y=6.536x + 24y = 6.5.

  3. Adding: 60(x+y)=12.560(x + y) = 12.5, so x+y=524x + y = \frac{5}{24}. Subtracting: 12(x−y)=0.512(x - y) = 0.5, so x−y=124x - y = \frac{1}{24}.

  4. x=18x = \frac{1}{8}, y=112y = \frac{1}{12}: upstream 8 km/h, downstream 12 km/h.

  5. Stream =12−82=2= \frac{12 - 8}{2} = 2 km/h.

Worth noting

10 km/h is the boat's speed in still water; 4 km/h is the difference before halving.
