Conditional Probability & Bayes' Theorem · Question 80 of 125

Question 80

EasyOriginal question

A bag holds three coins: a fair coin, a coin with a head on both sides, and a coin that shows a head with probability 14\frac{1}{4}. A coin is picked at random and tossed. What is the probability of a head?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Each coin is picked with probability 13\frac{1}{3}, and the coins show a head with probabilities 12\frac{1}{2}, 1 and 14\frac{1}{4}.

  2. 13(12+1+14)=13×74=712\frac{1}{3}\left(\frac{1}{2} + 1 + \frac{1}{4}\right) = \frac{1}{3} \times \frac{7}{4} = \frac{7}{12}.

Worth noting

512\frac{5}{12} gives the two-headed coin a head only half the time; it shows a head every time.
