Question 30

HardOriginal question

How does f(x)={1−cos⁡2xx,x≠02,x=0f(x) = \begin{cases} \frac{\sqrt{1 - \cos 2x}}{x}, & x \ne 0 \\ \sqrt{2}, & x = 0 \end{cases} behave at x=0x = 0?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. 1−cos⁡2x=2sin⁡2x1 - \cos 2x = 2\sin^{2} x, so 1−cos⁡2x=2∣sin⁡x∣\sqrt{1 - \cos 2x} = \sqrt{2}\lvert \sin x \rvert and f(x)=2∣sin⁡x∣xf(x) = \frac{\sqrt{2}\lvert \sin x \rvert}{x}.

  2. From the right this tends to 2\sqrt{2}, from the left to −2-\sqrt{2}: the one-sided limits differ.

Worth noting

Writing 2sin⁡2x\sqrt{2\sin^{2} x} as 2sin⁡x\sqrt{2}\sin x drops the modulus; to the left of 0, sin⁡x<0\sin x < 0.
