Question 29

HardOriginal question

How does f(x)={xsin⁡1x,x≠00,x=0f(x) = \begin{cases} x \sin \frac{1}{x}, & x \ne 0 \\ 0, & x = 0 \end{cases} behave at x=0x = 0?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. −∣x∣≤xsin⁡1x≤∣x∣-\lvert x \rvert \le x \sin \frac{1}{x} \le \lvert x \rvert, because sin⁡1x\sin \frac{1}{x} stays between −1-1 and 1.

  2. Both bounds tend to 0, so xsin⁡1x→0=f(0)x \sin \frac{1}{x} \to 0 = f(0) from either side: continuous.

Worth noting

sin⁡1x\sin \frac{1}{x} alone has no limit at 0, but the factor xx squeezes the product to 0.
