Question 57

HardOriginal question

For which aa and bb is f(x)={sin⁡axx,x<04,x=0ebx−12x,x>0f(x) = \begin{cases} \frac{\sin ax}{x}, & x < 0 \\ 4, & x = 0 \\ \frac{e^{bx} - 1}{2x}, & x > 0 \end{cases} continuous at x=0x = 0?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Left: sin⁡axx=a⋅sin⁡axax→a\frac{\sin ax}{x} = a \cdot \frac{\sin ax}{ax} \to a, and it must equal f(0)=4f(0) = 4, so a=4a = 4.

  2. Right: ebx−12x=b2⋅ebx−1bx→b2\frac{e^{bx} - 1}{2x} = \frac{b}{2} \cdot \frac{e^{bx} - 1}{bx} \to \frac{b}{2}, so b2=4\frac{b}{2} = 4 and b=8b = 8.

Worth noting

a=4, b=4a = 4,\ b = 4 forgets the 2 in 2x2x, which halves the right-hand limit.
