Continuity & Differentiability · Question 56 of 125

Question 56

HardOriginal question

f(x)=log⁡(1+3x)−log⁡(1−2x)xf(x) = \frac{\log(1 + 3x) - \log(1 - 2x)}{x} for x≠0x \ne 0, and the value of ff at x=0x = 0 is kk. For which kk is ff continuous at x=0x = 0?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. log⁡(1+3x)x=3⋅log⁡(1+3x)3x→3\frac{\log(1 + 3x)}{x} = 3 \cdot \frac{\log(1 + 3x)}{3x} \to 3 and log⁡(1−2x)x=−2⋅log⁡(1−2x)−2x→−2\frac{\log(1 - 2x)}{x} = -2 \cdot \frac{\log(1 - 2x)}{-2x} \to -2.

  2. The limit is 3−(−2)=53 - (-2) = 5, so k=5k = 5.

Worth noting

1 takes the second limit as 2, losing the minus sign in 1−2x1 - 2x.
