Question 49

MediumOriginal question

f(x)=xtan⁡x1−cos⁡xf(x) = \frac{x \tan x}{1 - \cos x} for x≠0x \ne 0, and the value of ff at x=0x = 0 is kk. For which kk is ff continuous at x=0x = 0?

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. 1−cos⁡x=2sin⁡2x21 - \cos x = 2\sin^{2} \frac{x}{2}, so f(x)=tan⁡xx⋅x22sin⁡2x2=tan⁡xx⋅2(x2sin⁡x2)2f(x) = \frac{\tan x}{x} \cdot \frac{x^{2}}{2\sin^{2} \frac{x}{2}} = \frac{\tan x}{x} \cdot 2\left(\frac{\frac{x}{2}}{\sin \frac{x}{2}}\right)^{2}.

  2. As x→0x \to 0 this tends to 1×2×1=21 \times 2 \times 1 = 2, so k=2k = 2.

Worth noting

1 replaces 1−cos⁡x1 - \cos x by x2x^{2}; near 0 it behaves like x22\frac{x^{2}}{2}.
