Question 50

HardOriginal question

Using ∫0af(x) dx=∫0af(a−x) dx\int_0^a f(x)\,dx = \int_0^a f(a - x)\,dx, evaluate ∫01x(1−x)5 dx\int_0^1 x(1 - x)^5\,dx.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Replacing xx by 1−x1 - x: ∫01(1−x)x5 dx=∫01(x5−x6) dx\int_0^1 (1 - x)x^5\,dx = \int_0^1 (x^5 - x^6)\,dx.

  2. =16−17=142= \frac{1}{6} - \frac{1}{7} = \frac{1}{42}.

Worth noting

16\frac{1}{6} integrates only the x5x^5 term and drops −x6-x^6.
