Question 15

MediumOriginal question

If ∫0k(2x+1) dx=12\int_0^k (2x + 1)\,dx = 12 and k>0k > 0, what is kk?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. ∫0k(2x+1) dx=k2+k\int_0^k (2x + 1)\,dx = k^2 + k.

  2. k2+k−12=0k^2 + k - 12 = 0, so (k+4)(k−3)=0(k + 4)(k - 3) = 0; with k>0k > 0, k=3k = 3.

Worth noting

232\sqrt{3} drops the +1+1 and solves k2=12k^2 = 12.
