Question 33

MediumOriginal question

If y+cos⁡y=x2y + \cos y = x^2, what is dydx\frac{dy}{dx}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Differentiate both sides: dydx−sin⁡ydydx=2x\frac{dy}{dx} - \sin y\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x.

  2. (1−sin⁡y)dydx=2x(1 - \sin y)\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x, so dydx=2x1−sin⁡y\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{2x}{1 - \sin y}.

Worth noting

2x1+sin⁡y\frac{2x}{1 + \sin y} takes the derivative of cos⁡y\cos y as +sin⁡y+\sin y; it is −sin⁡y⋅dydx-\sin y \cdot \frac{dy}{dx}.
