Question 78

HardOriginal question

If x=t2x = t^2 and y=t3y = t^3, what is d2ydx2\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} at t=1t = 1?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. dydx=3t22t=3t2\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{3t^2}{2t} = \frac{3t}{2}.

  2. d2ydx2=ddt(3t2)÷dxdt=32÷2t=34t\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} = \frac{d}{dt}\left(\frac{3t}{2}\right) \div \frac{dx}{dt} = \frac{3}{2} \div 2t = \frac{3}{4t}, which is 34\frac{3}{4} at t=1t = 1.

Worth noting

32\frac{3}{2} differentiates dydx\frac{dy}{dx} with respect to tt and stops: it still has to be divided by dxdt\frac{dx}{dt}.
