Determinants, Adjoint & Inverse · Question 85 of 87

Question 85

HardOriginal question

Solve by the matrix method: x+y+z=6x + y + z = 6, 2x−y+z=62x - y + z = 6, x+2y−z=1x + 2y - z = 1. What is zz?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. A=[1112−1112−1]A = \begin{bmatrix}1 & 1 & 1 \\ 2 & -1 & 1 \\ 1 & 2 & -1\end{bmatrix} and ∣A∣=7|A| = 7, so A−1A^{-1} exists.

  2. adj⁡A=[−1323−215−1−3]\operatorname{adj} A = \begin{bmatrix}-1 & 3 & 2 \\ 3 & -2 & 1 \\ 5 & -1 & -3\end{bmatrix}, so X=17(adj⁡A)B=[213]X = \frac{1}{7}(\operatorname{adj} A)B = \begin{bmatrix}2 \\ 1 \\ 3\end{bmatrix}.

  3. So x=2x = 2, y=1y = 1 and z=3z = 3. Check the third equation: 2+2−3=12 + 2 - 3 = 1.

Worth noting

2 is xx; read the third row of XX for zz.
