Question 38

MediumOriginal question

Which family of curves has the differential equation dydx=−2y\frac{dy}{dx} = -2y?

Options for question 38

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. For y=Ae−2xy = Ae^{-2x}, dydx=−2Ae−2x=−2y\frac{dy}{dx} = -2Ae^{-2x} = -2y, for every AA.

  2. Ae2xAe^{2x} gives +2y+2y, and −2x+A-2x + A gives −2-2, not −2y-2y.

Worth noting

y=Ax−2y = Ax^{-2} gives dydx=−2yx\frac{dy}{dx} = -\frac{2y}{x}, with an extra xx.
