Question 34

EasyOriginal question

Which differential equation does the family y=Ax2y = Ax^2 satisfy, AA being an arbitrary constant?

Options for question 34

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. dydx=2Ax\frac{dy}{dx} = 2Ax, and from the family A=yx2A = \frac{y}{x^2}.

  2. So dydx=2yx\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{2y}{x}, that is xdydx=2yx\frac{dy}{dx} = 2y.

Worth noting

dydx=2x\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x sets A=1A = 1 instead of eliminating AA: it describes one parabola, not the family.
