Question 46

HardOriginal question

Which differential equation describes the circles x2+y2=2axx^2 + y^2 = 2ax, with centre on the xx-axis and passing through the origin?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Differentiate: 2x+2ydydx=2a2x + 2y\frac{dy}{dx} = 2a, so a=x+ydydxa = x + y\frac{dy}{dx}.

  2. Put this back: x2+y2=2x(x+ydydx)x^2 + y^2 = 2x\left(x + y\frac{dy}{dx}\right), which gives 2xydydx=y2−x22xy\frac{dy}{dx} = y^2 - x^2.

Worth noting

ydydx=a−xy\frac{dy}{dx} = a - x still contains the constant aa; a differential equation of the family must not.
