Question 47

HardOriginal question

Which differential equation does the family y=ex(A+Bx)y = e^{x}(A + Bx) satisfy, A,BA, B being arbitrary constants?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. ye−x=A+Bxye^{-x} = A + Bx. Differentiate twice to remove AA, then BB: d2dx2(ye−x)=0\frac{d^2}{dx^2}\left(ye^{-x}\right) = 0.

  2. That is e−x(d2ydx2−2dydx+y)=0e^{-x}\left(\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} - 2\frac{dy}{dx} + y\right) = 0, so d2ydx2−2dydx+y=0\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} - 2\frac{dy}{dx} + y = 0.

Worth noting

d2ydx2−y=0\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} - y = 0 is the equation of Aex+Be−xAe^{x} + Be^{-x}; the repeated exe^{x} gives −2dydx-2\frac{dy}{dx}.
