Question 28

HardOriginal question

If f(x)=(x+x2+1)5f(x) = \left(x + \sqrt{x^{2} + 1}\right)^{5}, what is f′(34)f'\left(\frac{3}{4}\right)?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=5(x+x2+1)4(1+xx2+1)=5(x+x2+1)5x2+1f'(x) = 5\left(x + \sqrt{x^{2} + 1}\right)^{4}\left(1 + \frac{x}{\sqrt{x^{2} + 1}}\right) = \frac{5\left(x + \sqrt{x^{2} + 1}\right)^{5}}{\sqrt{x^{2} + 1}}.

  2. At 34\frac{3}{4}: x2+1=54\sqrt{x^{2} + 1} = \frac{5}{4} and x+x2+1=2x + \sqrt{x^{2} + 1} = 2, so f′=5×325/4=128f' = \frac{5 \times 32}{5/4} = 128.

Worth noting

80 is 5×245 \times 2^{4}, the outer derivative alone, without the inner factor 1+xx2+1=851 + \frac{x}{\sqrt{x^{2} + 1}} = \frac{8}{5}.
