Question 41

MediumOriginal question

If f(x)=xtan⁡−1xf(x) = x\tan^{-1} x, what is f′(3)f'\left(\sqrt{3}\right)?

Options for question 41

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Product rule: f′(x)=tan⁡−1x+x1+x2f'(x) = \tan^{-1} x + \frac{x}{1 + x^{2}}.

  2. At 3\sqrt{3}: tan⁡−13=π3\tan^{-1}\sqrt{3} = \frac{\pi}{3} and 31+3=34\frac{\sqrt{3}}{1 + 3} = \frac{\sqrt{3}}{4}, so f′=π3+34f' = \frac{\pi}{3} + \frac{\sqrt{3}}{4}.

Worth noting

π3\frac{\pi}{3} keeps only the term tan⁡−1x\tan^{-1} x and drops x⋅11+x2x \cdot \frac{1}{1 + x^{2}}.
