Question 52

HardOriginal question

Let y=cos⁡−1(1−x21+x2)y = \cos^{-1}\left(\frac{1 - x^{2}}{1 + x^{2}}\right) for every real xx. Which of the following statements are true?

I. y=2tan⁡−1xy = 2\tan^{-1} x for x≥0x \ge 0.

II. dydx=21+x2\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{2}{1 + x^{2}} for every x≠0x \ne 0.

III. dydx=−21+x2\frac{dy}{dx} = -\frac{2}{1 + x^{2}} for x<0x < 0.

IV. yy is not differentiable at x=0x = 0.

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Put x=tan⁡θx = \tan\theta: 1−x21+x2=cos⁡2θ\frac{1 - x^{2}}{1 + x^{2}} = \cos 2\theta. For x≥0x \ge 0, 2θ2\theta lies in [0,π)[0, \pi), so y=2tan⁡−1xy = 2\tan^{-1} x; for x<0x < 0, 2θ2\theta lies in (−π,0)(-\pi, 0), so y=−2tan⁡−1xy = -2\tan^{-1} x.

  2. So I and III are true and II is false. At 0 the slope from the right is 2 and from the left is −2-2, so IV is true.

Worth noting

II uses y=2tan⁡−1xy = 2\tan^{-1} x on both sides of 0; for x<0x < 0 the function is −2tan⁡−1x-2\tan^{-1} x.
