Question 128

HardOriginal question

A lamp hangs 5.4 m above a level road. A man 1.8 m tall walks straight away from the point below the lamp at 1.2 m/s. How fast is his shadow lengthening?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Let the man be xx m from the point below the lamp and his shadow ss m long. Similar triangles: s1.8=x+s5.4\frac{s}{1.8} = \frac{x + s}{5.4}, so 3.6s=1.8x3.6s = 1.8x and s=x2s = \frac{x}{2}.

  2. dsdt=12dxdt=12×1.2=0.6\frac{ds}{dt} = \frac{1}{2}\frac{dx}{dt} = \frac{1}{2} \times 1.2 = 0.6 m/s.

Worth noting

1.8 m/s is how fast the tip of the shadow moves, ddt(x+s)\frac{d}{dt}(x + s), not how fast the shadow lengthens.
