Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 30 of 74

Question 30

HardOriginal question

A function has f′(x)=x2(x+2)f'(x) = x^{2} \left(x + 2\right). Find the interval(s) on which ff is strictly increasing.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. x2≥0x^{2} \ge 0 always, so the sign of f′f' is the sign of x+2x + 2.

  2. f′>0f' > 0 for x>−2x > -2 except at x=0x = 0, where it is 0 for an instant; a single such point does not stop ff from strictly increasing.

  3. So ff is strictly increasing on (−2,∞)(-2, \infty).

Worth noting

Stopping at x=0x = 0 treats a zero of a squared factor as a change of sign; it is not one.
