Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 33 of 74

Question 33

EasyOriginal question

Find the interval(s) on which f(x)=x3−27x+2f(x) = x^{3} - 27 x + 2 is strictly decreasing.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=3x2−27=3(x−3)(x+3)f'(x) = 3 x^{2} - 27 = 3 \left(x - 3\right) \left(x + 3\right), which is 0 at x=−3x = -3 and x=3x = 3.

  2. f′(x)>0f'(x) > 0 on (−∞,−3)∪(3,∞)(-\infty, -3) \cup (3, \infty) and f′(x)<0f'(x) < 0 on (−3,3)(-3, 3).

  3. So ff is strictly decreasing on (−3,3)(-3, 3).

Worth noting

(−∞,−3)∪(3,∞)(-\infty, -3) \cup (3, \infty) is where it is strictly increasing: the sign of f′f' was read the wrong way.
