Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 32 of 74

Question 32

EasyOriginal question

Find the interval(s) on which f(x)=x3−3x2−9x+5f(x) = x^{3} - 3 x^{2} - 9 x + 5 is strictly decreasing.

Options for question 32

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=3x2−6x−9=3(x−3)(x+1)f'(x) = 3 x^{2} - 6 x - 9 = 3 \left(x - 3\right) \left(x + 1\right), which is 0 at x=−1x = -1 and x=3x = 3.

  2. f′(x)>0f'(x) > 0 on (−∞,−1)∪(3,∞)(-\infty, -1) \cup (3, \infty) and f′(x)<0f'(x) < 0 on (−1,3)(-1, 3).

  3. So ff is strictly decreasing on (−1,3)(-1, 3).

Worth noting

(−∞,−1)∪(3,∞)(-\infty, -1) \cup (3, \infty) is where it is strictly increasing: the sign of f′f' was read the wrong way.
