Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 39 of 74

Question 39

MediumOriginal question

Find the interval(s) on which f(x)=−x3+3x2+9x−2f(x) = - x^{3} + 3 x^{2} + 9 x - 2 is strictly increasing.

Options for question 39

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=−3x2+6x+9=−3(x−3)(x+1)f'(x) = - 3 x^{2} + 6 x + 9 = - 3 \left(x - 3\right) \left(x + 1\right), which is 0 at x=−1x = -1 and x=3x = 3.

  2. f′(x)>0f'(x) > 0 on (−1,3)(-1, 3) and f′(x)<0f'(x) < 0 on (−∞,−1)∪(3,∞)(-\infty, -1) \cup (3, \infty).

  3. So ff is strictly increasing on (−1,3)(-1, 3).

Worth noting

(−∞,−1)∪(3,∞)(-\infty, -1) \cup (3, \infty) is where it is strictly decreasing: the sign of f′f' was read the wrong way.
