Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 46 of 74

Question 46

HardOriginal question

Find the interval(s) on which f(x)=−2x3+15x2−36x+1f(x) = - 2 x^{3} + 15 x^{2} - 36 x + 1 is strictly decreasing.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=−6x2+30x−36=−6(x−3)(x−2)f'(x) = - 6 x^{2} + 30 x - 36 = - 6 \left(x - 3\right) \left(x - 2\right), which is 0 at x=2x = 2 and x=3x = 3.

  2. f′(x)>0f'(x) > 0 on (2,3)(2, 3) and f′(x)<0f'(x) < 0 on (−∞,2)∪(3,∞)(-\infty, 2) \cup (3, \infty).

  3. So ff is strictly decreasing on (−∞,2)∪(3,∞)(-\infty, 2) \cup (3, \infty).

Worth noting

(2,3)(2, 3) is where it is strictly increasing: the sign of f′f' was read the wrong way.
