Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 9 of 74

Question 9

MediumOriginal question

ff is strictly increasing and gg is strictly decreasing on R\mathbb{R}. Which describes h(x)=f(g(x))h(x) = f(g(x))?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Take x1<x2x_1 < x_2. As gg is strictly decreasing, g(x1)>g(x2)g(x_1) > g(x_2).

  2. As ff is strictly increasing, it keeps that order: f(g(x1))>f(g(x2))f(g(x_1)) > f(g(x_2)). So hh is strictly decreasing.

Worth noting

One decreasing step reverses the order once, and the increasing step keeps it, so the order ends reversed: try f(x)=xf(x) = x, g(x)=−xg(x) = -x.
