Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 49 of 74

Question 49

HardOriginal question

Find the interval(s) on which f(x)=x2e−xf(x) = x^{2} e^{- x} is strictly increasing.

Options for question 49

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=−x(x−2)e−xf'(x) = - x \left(x - 2\right) e^{- x}, which is 0 at x=0,2x = 0, 2.

  2. f′(x)>0f'(x) > 0 on (0,2)(0, 2) and f′(x)<0f'(x) < 0 on (−∞,0)∪(2,∞)(-\infty, 0) \cup (2, \infty).

  3. So ff is strictly increasing on (0,2)(0, 2).

Worth noting

(−∞,0)∪(2,∞)(-\infty, 0) \cup (2, \infty) is where it is strictly decreasing: the sign of f′f' was read the wrong way.
