Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 50 of 74

Question 50

HardOriginal question

Find the interval(s) on which f(x)=x4−2x2f(x) = x^{4} - 2 x^{2} is strictly increasing.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=4x(x−1)(x+1)f'(x) = 4 x \left(x - 1\right) \left(x + 1\right), which is 0 at x=−1,0,1x = -1, 0, 1.

  2. f′(x)>0f'(x) > 0 on (−1,0)∪(1,∞)(-1, 0) \cup (1, \infty) and f′(x)<0f'(x) < 0 on (−∞,−1)∪(0,1)(-\infty, -1) \cup (0, 1).

  3. So ff is strictly increasing on (−1,0)∪(1,∞)(-1, 0) \cup (1, \infty).

Worth noting

(−∞,−1)∪(0,1)(-\infty, -1) \cup (0, 1) is where it is strictly decreasing: the sign of f′f' was read the wrong way.
