Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 4 of 74

Question 4

EasyOriginal question

On which interval is f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 strictly decreasing?

Options for question 4

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. For x1<x2<0x_1 < x_2 < 0, squaring reverses the order: (−3)2>(−2)2(-3)^2 > (-2)^2, for example. So x2x^2 falls as xx rises towards 0.

  2. For positive xx it rises, so it is strictly decreasing on (−∞,0)(-\infty, 0) only.

Worth noting

On (0,∞)(0, \infty) the square rises: 22<322^2 < 3^2.
